The School of Architecture at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the second oldest architecture program in the United States. The first curriculum of the School of Architecture was introduced in 1867 and graduated its first student, Dr. Nathan Clifford Ricker in 1873. Dr. Nathan Clifford Ricker, the first-ever graduate of an American architecture school, took the helm of the University of Illinois Architecture program and embarked on the long journey towards new architecture. While at the University, Dr. Ricker was a member of the organizational team which established Alpha Rho Chi in 1914. Due to his efforts, Alpha Rho Chi honored Dr. Ricker as our first Master Architect.
Alpha Rho Chi is a professional, co-educational fraternity focused in the field of architecture with branches in related disciplines.
The University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign Anthemios Chapter, along with The University of Michigan Iktinos Chapter are the two co-founding chapters of our national fraternity, with an alumni network that reaches across the country and around the world. During a century of its existence, many Alumni have been recognized for their architectural creativity and innovation. These include Max Abramowitz, Cesar Pelli, Ralph Johnson, George Keck, and William Keck.
Currently, our chapter continues to grow by welcoming new members that are in design related fields, such as Industrial Design, Graphic Design, Sustainable Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture, and other allied arts. We seek to create a branch of connection between those in the various design fields, to grow and learn from one another. And while we still call all members of our fraternity, “brothers” as tradition, we are open to people of all genders and identities.
